Even though it’s a regular Tuesday in Australia, across the world in New York City it’s the first Monday of May, marking the biggest event on the fashion calendar – the Met Gala. Some of the most famous faces from fashion, film, music and art have come together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute. In celebration of the grand opening of its latest exhibition, this year’s red carpet theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. In previous years, the red carpet has been lacklustre. Patron saint Rihanna usually carries the show and is sometimes one of the only celebrities to properly dress to the themes. But my hoping and praying paid off, because this year we were finally blessed with some gorgeous, heavenly fashion moments. Give this post a “like” if you enjoy it, and keep reading to see who I thought took us to Church.
Rihanna wearing Maison Margiela by John Galliano
After dressing like the Pope, it’s only right to start with the head of the Catholic Church, or the head of the Met Gala. In an overly embellished coat, dress and matching Mitre with Louboutin’s to finish off the look, Rihanna was a vision. Do I think she stole the show like she has in previous years? No, which I’m happy about. I’m so glad there were more stunning looks, and here’s who else I was super impressed with.
Jennifer Lopez in Balmain
Trust JLo to serve us another dose of one of my favourite fashion houses of all time, Balmain. This aesthetic is so her but has been fitted to this theme perfectly. The cross on the chest looks like a stained glass window and the sleek hair just makes everything else shine. I also own a pair of heels exactly like this, so I’m a step closer to being like Jen, right?
Stella Maxwell in Moschino
Is my absolute adoration for heavily embellished garments obvious yet? I gasped when I saw this dress, I just think it’s so beautiful. While I love the looks that are way more ‘costume’ like, I also loved the dresses like this that have so much detailing paired with minimal hair and makeup. I don’t even want to know how heavy this was, so props to her for going strapless.
Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
This is a dream. Priyanka’s headpiece is absolutely stunning, and the red velvet is just so rich and gorgeous. Again, the balance between statement and simplicity is perfectly met. She looks like she’s just walked out of a painting. I was surprised when I saw this was Ralph Lauren, which makes me like it even more.
Zendaya in Versace
If Rihanna is the President of the Met, Zendaya is her VP. Year after year she’s delivered memorable, iconic looks that makes everyone else look basic, and this year was no exception. Her ‘Joan of Arc-esque’ get up was both unexpected and seriously on brand. Striking the perfect balance between structured and free form, powerful and delicate, Zendaya’s Versace number was definitely a Top 3 pick for me.
Jeremy Scott and Cardi B in Moschino
When I first saw Cardi B I liked her look, but when I saw this photo of her matching with Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, it made my heart soar. They just look so sweet together? From the pearls to the train to the headpiece, this whole look is heavenly. Also major props to Cardi for rocking her first Met Gala in this look while heavily pregnant.
Gigi Hadid in Versace
Is this look knocking me over the head with its Catholic influence? No, but it’s stunning, and I just couldn’t not include it. This looks like a work of art, and while Gigi usually gets praise for whatever she wears, this look is just beautiful and one of my favourite looks from her ever.
Chadwick Boseman in Versace
Let’s hear it for the boys, because Chadwick Boseman took us to Church and back in this look. Can Versace do no wrong this year? Obviously not. This is once again a stunning look from them. All the men in black suits on the famous steps of the Met, please take note. This is how you dress. The gold, the detailing, the white, the pop of red, I am being resurrected. God bless.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Ralph Lauren
Holy dooly. Stunning. Just stunning. This is so simple and gorgeous. It’s not the most daring or costume like, but the minimalism of the halo takes this to such a chic level. Rosie is friggen gorgeous, so anything would look wonderful on her, but this look was just so classic and beautiful.
Alessandro Michele, Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto in Gucci
These three, together, look incredible. Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele’s mind is insane as these looks just hit it out of the park. Inspired by Our Lady of Sorrows, Lana’s dress features a Seven Sorrows of Mary bodice with the initials ‘LDR’ on the heart. With hand stitched gold metal and baroque inspired floral embroidery, this trio was one of my best dressed.
Ariana Grande in Vera Wang
How can I go past Ariana Grande wearing the Sistine Chapel on her dress? I’m obsessed with this print, and looking at it now I’m surprised I didn’t see more of this type of symbolism on the carpet. The bow in the hair is an on brand youthful choice, while the layer of mesh over the top of the figures adds that final dreamy vibe. I keep saying this, but this is also one of my best dressed. I didn’t really expect this from her, but it’s so beautiful and her hair, makeup and minimal jewellery is stunning.
Blake Lively in Versace
We knew this was going to be the grand finale. Blake killed it for me this year. This dress is stunning, and with 600 hours of work sewn into every stitch, this gown is definitely a work of art. Look at that detailing! Look at that train! The stunning headpiece! And of course it’s all Versace. She looks like a queen. Let the Church say amen.
So those are my top picks for best dressed at this year’s Met Gala! I struggled to narrow down a Top 10, which is always a good sign. I loved this theme. I almost fell of my chair when I looked it up the other day and saw Catholic because religion is a theme I see a lot in one of my favourite brands Dolce & Gabbana (who weren’t super present on the carpet this year? A bit disappointing) so I’m really happy there were so many wonderful looks.
Who were some of your best dressed? Or who do you think I sinfully left off the list? Or better yet, who do you think was worst dressed? A Jenner comes to mind. Leave me a comment below, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
