Ignore the fact that we’re already a quarter of the way into August – it’s July Favourites time! July was one of my favourite months of the year so far. From discovering new things to rediscovering old favourites, from starting new opportunities and closing the pages on another book, to celebrating birthdays and entering more milestones, July had a little bit of everything. If you enjoy this post give it a “like” so I know, and let’s get into another monthly favourites!
Colourpop No Filter Foundation – I’ve already written a dazzling review of this stunner of a foundation, which you can read in all its glory here, so I’ll keep this short and sweet. I love this foundation. It’s lightweight, has a medium to full coverage finish, is a perfect match to my skin tone, has great longevity, and the best part? It’s $12! I can’t say more.
Colourpop Supernova Shadow in Moon Lit – I freaking adore liquid shadows, and Colourpop has an affordable line of insanely beautiful colours. Their bronzy shade ‘Walk of Fame’ is a firm favourite of mine, but since buying two of them, I’ve noticed I barely wear the metallic purple shade Moon Lit I bought when I bought a couple. In July I gave it a proper whirl and wore it on my eyes out for dinner one night and fell in love with it. It sounds intimidating, but on the eyes it’s the most beautiful, metallic yet wearable purple shade! It looks amazing with neutral shades, but really pops when you pair it with matte warm tones as they contrast so beautifully together! If you’re shopping for liquid shadows and Stila’s $36 EACH ones are too expensive (rightly so), check out Colourpop’s $7 ones, they’re just as wonderful.
Kylie Cosmetics Damn Gina Gloss – Kylie Cosmetics might not be good at certain products but they honest to god kick it out of the ball park with their lip gloss formula. I’ve never tried a lip gloss that’s so pigmented, silky, non-sticky and, especially with their shimmer shades, multidimensional. When the light hits this pinky peachy shade Damn Gina it literally explodes (okay not literally but like figuratively) with glitter and looks so amazing on the lips. It’s my go-to shade for when I want a gloss, and since I had a bunch of 21st birthdays and dinners in July, it was a staple in my bag!
QV Intensive Moisturiser – July means winter and with the cold weather my hands suffer like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve always liked this heavy duty moisturiser from QV, but since they came out with a convenient squeezy tube it’s been living on my bedside table and gets thrown in my bag every day before I leave the house. It’s thick and it doesn’t sink into your skin immediately but my god does it eventually do its job. I’ve also been using it as a lip balm now and it thwarts my flimsy little Nivea lip balms my bag keeps eating.
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan – My home slice Natalie Brown has been recommending me this novel for yonks (but for an actual figure, literally since this time last year) and I kept saying I’d read it soon, and in July I finally did! Long story short, it was sensational, and I am now recommending it onto you. Here’s a quick summary written better than I could ever manage.
Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.
If I were to describe the novel in one word it would be OPULENCE. The amount of money and luxury in this book is unimaginable, but Kwan’s writing is so effortless that I felt like Rachel Chu every time she would walk onto a private jet or into a palace – in awe, feeling out of place, but wanting more. There’s two more novels in the series, and after the whirlwind that was the first, I can’t wait to settle down with the sequel China Rich Girlfriend.
Film & TV
Incredibles 2 – I finally saw the Incredibles 2! It was amazing! I was genuinely on edge in certain parts and when a kid had to leave half way through because it was a bit much I was like “same.” If you’re an Incredibles fan, you’ll absolutely love it. If you’re not a fan, what are you doing?
Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette – To put it very, very, so incredibly lightly, Nanette will leave a lasting impression on you. I can’t even fathom how to review her Netflix special because it was the most brilliant thing I’ve seen all year. It was hilarious, confronting, heart breaking and hollowing. I needed a hug after watching it, and also a strong drink. She sets her entire stand up special up in the first 20 minutes and then turns it completely on its head. The phrase ‘required viewing’ is a complete understatement. If you haven’t seen Nanette yet, do it now!
H&M Cushions – On a lighter note, let’s get into some lifestyle content. In July I was on university break and was dying to redecorate a little bit. I’ve been on the hunt for this specific shade of orange coloured pillows for my couch for ages (odd request I know) but when walking past H&M one day I saw them in the window and made a bee line for them. I snapped up two and a couple of blush pink ones to match and they make me so happy! They were so affordable but have just given my room a boost because everything was starting to look so boring and humdrum.
Forever New Glitter Phone Case – I have a mini polaroid frame that has water and glitter inside it and looks amazing when you shake it, so when I saw a phone case with a similar design, I threw my card down on the counter. It’s clear, I can see my gold phone colouring, it has gold glitter AND pieces of gold and pink confetti floating around inside, and it’s the most entertaining thing I own.
Race Chaser with Alaska and Willam Podcast – Hi this is literally one of my favourite things to ever freaking happen. My favourite drag queens Alaska and Willam have teamed up and now have a weekly podcast when they have gone back to the very beginning and are recapping every single episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. There are a bunch of RPDR recap podcasts, but none have been created by queens who have actually been on the show. Their commentary is hilarious, insightful, they bounce off each other so perfectly and it’s just a ripper of a good time. I rated it 5 stars before it even began.
Emma Chamberlain – It’s been a long time since I’ve discovered someone new on YouTube and genuinely loved them. I used to watch so many beauty gurus, but since they’re all so repetitive now, I just find myself watching the masterpieces that are Shane Dawson‘s videos and moving on. HOWEVER! I discovered Emma Chamberlain and I’m obsessed. Even though she’s not doing anything exceptionally unique, she’s unlike anyone else I watch. She’s down to earth, hilarious and authentic. I was baffled when I saw she had 3 million followers and I hadn’t ever heard of her, but after watching her videos and realising she only started her channel around last year, it’s not hard to understand how or why she’s gained such a large following in such a short time.
Started my FINAL semester of university – Woohoo! The end is near. In a few short months I’ll be graduating university. While that’s weird to think about, I’m actually excited. I felt like this in Year 12, I just feel ready to go and move on. BUT! Standing before me and a little piece of paper that says I’m qualified, there are some final hard yards to walk, hoops to jump through, and assignments to slave over. I’ve also started a new job along with my current one, so I’m also trying to juggle that too.
So in a very uncharacteristic move for me, I’ve decided to go on a blogging hiatus for the rest of August and most of September! A lot of my assessment is due in the first part of the semester, and knowing I’m close to finishing my degree means it wasn’t a hard choice to pause my blog for a little bit! I haven’t taken a ‘break’ from posting since I started back in late 2015, so while I’m sad to not be as active here, I’ve recently enjoyed being so active over on my Instagram, especially the stories function! So if you’d like to stay in touch, follow my Instagram!
What were some of your favourite things from July? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to know! And if you enjoyed this post, give it a “like” so I know!
This was a huge post so if you made it to the end, thank you! I can’t wait to come back to this blog in a few weeks and continue, but in the meantime, wish me luck as I sprint to the finish line of my degree!
All the love,
