December is upon us! The final month of the year brings with it the Christmas season, but if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere like myself, we’re just now entering three long months of Summer heat. With a chock-full social calendar and soaring temperatures, I thought I’d share the makeup essentials I reach for to achieve both a sweat-proof base and some festive season sparkle.
When the seasons change, we change our wardrobe, swapping our wooly knits for loose summery dresses. I do the same with my makeup, taking thick foundations out of my routine and instead opting for something with a lighter base to let my skin breathe more in the heat. When thinking about summer makeup I also find myself sticking to a few key elements; a light, healthy base with a setting powder, natural brows, warm tones on the eyes, heaps of highlighter, and a setting spray to keep it all in place.
I recently bought the Maybelline Face Studio Primer on a whim after seeing it half price. I’ve been on a setting spray/primer rampage recently and want to try as many as possible in the hunt to find the perfect one (a big comparison post is coming in January! I already have so many thoughts.) I didn’t think I would be wow’ed by it, but I was wrong. This primer is one of the only ones I’ve tried so far that has a slight tint to it. It walks the line between a primer and a BB Cream, making it perfect for summer. It says it will blur and minimise your pores, and I genuinely think it does that. I put it all over my face and set it with powder and it gives me the perfect quick and easy, everyday complexion routine I want for summer. It has an ever so slightly greasy feeling which might be off-putting, but a powder solves that issue for me. If you’re in the mood to buy a super expensive primer that it top class, I highly recommend the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer. This stuff is the best of the best, but she’s pricey, which is why I have a teeny tiny bottle.
Speaking of powders, I cannot recommend the Revlon Colourstay Pressed Powder enough. This stuff is like a barrier to sweat and will lock your makeup in place even on the hottest of summer days. Before I went on Roaccutane I used to have really oily skin, and this stuff was my saviour. I still use it every day now, even with a more balanced skin type. It gives my skin a flawless finish effect and makes any product underneath and on top look amazing.
My go-to highlighter is the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in the shade Champagne Pop. I used to save this only for special occasions, but in recent months I’ve thought ‘screw it’ and use it everyday and love how it looks. BECCA highlighters are so finely milled that they don’t look sparkly or glittery on your skin, but instead look glowing. I dust this everywhere – on my cheekbones, bridge of my nose, inner corners of my eyes, temples, cupids bow (that little middle of your top lip area). You’re going to sweat in summer, so you might as well lean into it and just glow instead.
Onto the eyes, my favourite part of my makeup routine! When I bought the NARS Atomic Blonde Eye & Cheek palette earlier this year, it immediately reminded me of summer. It’s four essential warm eyeshadows, bronzer and highlighter make it the most perfect summer staple. The bronzer, which I dust on all the high points of my face, can double as a matte transition shade for your eyeshadow, and the highlighter is so beautiful, it makes your skin shine in the best possible way. The shadows are absolutely stunning, every single time I use this palette I get compliments and asked what I used.

Onto the finishing touches! For fluffy, natural looking brows I’ve been using the Colourpop Brow Gel in recent months and love it. It has a super fine brush, meaning you’re able to get every hair without accidentally putting product on your skin. It’s a small tube, but it’s mighty. A few months ago I bit the bullet and finally bought the MAC Fix+ Prep & Prime mist, and I love it. I don’t use it before makeup, but after, and it sets everything so well. It takes excess powder off my face and makes every product melt into each other slightly, creating a seamless final look.
So those are my makeup essentials for this summer! This is definitely a look that’s on the lighter side that I’ll be wearing most days. For special events I would definitely recommend a foundation that won’t budge, but those foundations can be quite thick and heavy and become overwhelming in the summer heat. What products do you love wearing in summer? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to know. Also don’t forget to give this post a “like” if you enjoyed it.
