It was only the other night when I practically danced my way into my bathroom for an early shower just so I could start my nightly routine did I realise just how much I now love skincare. I know I’m not alone in this obsession and that skincare is having a moment, while I feel like the beauty industry is taking a much needed step back, whether it wants to or not. I’m not addicted to skincare (yet) and I haven’t splashed out on anything ridiculously expensive (yet), but a whole bunch of new items have entered my life over the past couple of months, so I thought I’d share my thought on them so far.
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion — I’ve seen this little bottle everywhere for years, but it was Emma Chamberlain’s very candid videos wearing this that finally got me realistically looking into it. I was shook to see it was only $26 (I just assume every skincare item will be like, $50+) but even more shook at how bad it smells. It is quiet literally the most intense smell I’ve ever encountered and I don’t even know how to describe it (wet grass? soil after lots of rain?? But super chemically?). However I will stress that the smell vanishes as soon as it dries down on your skin …¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But what is this? A spot treatment that you put on your pimples before bed and it works to dry them out overnight so they go away quicker. I haven’t woken up with a pimple completely gone on the first night, but by the second it has grabbed its coat and is walking out the door. I would genuinely recommend this if you want a targeted spot treatment.
Go-To Face Case — Love of my actual life. My sister and I bought each other silk pillowcases for Christmas as we both wanted them and I am obsessed. I’ve had my eye on one for months and I can say with certainty that all the benefits of sleeping on silk are true. My hair is smoother because my flyaways are going crazy due to there being no friction from the silk. My skin is looking great (can’t confirm that the silk is solely responsible but it has had a huge hand in it) and when I wake up in my morning, I feel like my face looks calmer and doesn’t look squished, you know? OH! And you get no creases, so less wrinkles down the track. And it doesn’t soak up all your skincare. Silk man… would recommend.
Go-To Very Useful Face Cream — Another wonderful Go-To product. If I had to use one word to describe this face cream I’d use nourishing. It just injects so much moisture into my skin and then seals it in, tucks it into bed and kisses it on the forehead. I also love the smell of this stuff. Go-To always nail their scents (please make a Face Hero scented perfume, or candle, I will buy 10). I also think this has done some great stuff for my pores. I just feel like my face is clearer? I have a tiny travel container that I got in their Christmas Advent Calendar so soon I’m going to happily commit to a full bottle, or maybe even the huge tub. I will say this though, a little goes a long way!
Go-To Exfoliating Swipeys — I REALLY like these. I was so hesitant to buy them because it would be my *drum-roll* first chemical exfoliator containing AHA, which stands for alpha hydroxy acid (sadly not “aha!”) What does all this mean? Mecca tells us that “an ‘acid’ may sound extreme but they are actually very gentle.” Go-To uses “lactic acid, the most gentle of all AHAs” in these swipes as AHAs “tends to give a far more thorough, even result than scrubbing your face with harsh, jagged particles” — like the cursed St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I’ve used these a couple of times (2-3 times a week is MAX, I would stick to 2) and it actually does (gently!) get all the crap out of my pores and leaves my skin feeling really soft and smooth afterwards. Finish this off with some Face Hero and Very Useful Face Cream? Just… *chefs kiss*
Tip: Please be even more diligent with your daily SPF if you start using AHAs or BHAs as your skin will be even more sensitive!
Fluff Casual Cosmetics Face Oil — Since I really like Go-To’s Face Hero I thought I’d give Fluff’s new Face Oil a try, and I like it! It’s a much thinner consistency then Face Hero which means it’s good for daytime wear, whereas my Go-To Face Hero is thicker so it’s a great one to wear overnight. It feels good on the skin and definitely gives you glowy, hydrated look. I’m not sure if it’s just me and my whack sense of smell, but this lowkey smells like salami? So I only use a little bit of it, as a treat. Memes aside, it has some sort of smell, which reminds me of salami, but I don’t mind it. I don’t think it makes my actual face smell like salami? The packaging isn’t my favourite, but I like that they don’t conform to what’s normal and expected of beauty products and make everything pink.
Fluff Casual Cosmetics Lip Oil — When I ordered their Face Oil I also ordered their new lip oil and it’s super cute! I went with the tinted version instead of their clear version and love the colour it gives off. It’s a natural, flattering shade, just like their bronzer. However it’s not a super creamy, hydrating lip balm and I find that once it wears off, my lips will immediately need moisture, whereas a thick lip balm like the original Lanolips formula tends to continue working even once it has worn off. The packaging is incredible. It’s a baby version of their bronzer and slides open.
Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask — Tacking this overnight mask on the end of this because I’ve only used it once so far but loved it. I’ve had my eye on it for literally 2, almost 3 years and finally bought it the other day. I’m not entirely sure where this step fits into my nighttime routine (before my swipes, face oil and face cream, or after!?), but so far it’s been a great product to use when you want to give your skin a little more TLC 🙂
What are some of your favourite skincare items? Let me know!
